- About This Ecosystem -

Somerset East, Eastern Cape

Semi-arid valley bushveld gives way to transitional grassland, forest patches, and Karoo shrubland, forming a mosaic landscape of striking ecological diversity. In the valleys, dense bushveld and thicket vegetation establish themselves on relatively fertile soils, where woody species such as Vachellia karroo and Euclea undulata weave closed, sheltered habitats with limited grass cover beneath their canopies.

These communities gradually open into the Eastern Karoo grasslands, where grasses such as Themeda triandra and Pentzia incana intermingle with low shrubs across shallow soils, a landscape growing quieter and more austere as aridity increases. In cooler, fire-sheltered refugia, discrete patches of Afrotemperate forest endure. Here, a closed canopy of Podocarpus latifolius and Ocotea bullata draws in shade and moisture, sustaining rich microhabitats insulated from the drier world beyond.

Surrounding these systems, the broader landscape shifts into Nama-Karoo vegetation, a characteristically open, dwarf-shrub matrix of Ruschia spp. and grasses such as Karoochloa purpurea,  punctuated by savanna elements where scattered trees rise above a continuous grassy understory.
